From time to time, Northern Lites hosts D.R.A.G. Skates (Designated Roster – Approved Guys)—women-focused drop-in sessions where a limited number of pre-approved men are invited to join us on the ice.
The purpose of a D.R.A.G. skate is not to make the game faster or more physical. It's to provide a fun, supportive environment where our players can skate with a wider variety of teammates while preserving the welcoming culture that makes Northern Lites unique.
If you're invited to a D.R.A.G. skate, remember that you're joining our skate. We have players of all experience levels, including brand-new skaters, and we expect everyone to help create an environment where every player feels safe, included, and confident. Play with awareness, adjust your pace, and remember that a great shift isn't measured by how many goals you score—it's measured by whether everyone leaves wanting to come back.
This is a women-focused skate.
D.R.A.G. skates exist to support the development and enjoyment of our women's hockey community. While invited men are a valued part of these sessions, the atmosphere, pace, and priorities remain centered on our members.
Be respectful—on and off the ice.
Respect extends beyond words. Be aware of your speed, positioning, stick work, and interactions with others. Encourage teammates, communicate positively, and help create an environment where everyone feels welcome.
Adjust your game for the group.
Our skates often include first-time players alongside experienced skaters. We expect invited guys to skate under control, make smart decisions with the puck, and create opportunities for everyone to participate. This isn't the place to showcase your fastest shot or hardest edgework.
Limit physical contact.
This is a non-checking, recreational skate. Avoid unnecessary contact, aggressive board play, or physical battles for the puck. Winning a puck battle isn't worth someone losing confidence.
Leave your ego at the door.
The best D.R.A.G. skaters make everyone around them better. Set up plays, include newer players, celebrate good moments, and remember why you're here.
When in doubt...
Err on the side of less speed and more space. If you're ever wondering whether a play is "too much," it probably is.
Participation in a D.R.A.G. skate is by invitation and may be revoked at any time. We reserve the right to limit or discontinue participation if a player is not contributing to the safe, respectful, and welcoming environment that Northern Lites is known for.
Participation in a D.R.A.G. skate is by invitation only.
Northern Lites leadership identifies potential D.R.A.G. skaters by skating with them in other settings—such as co-ed leagues, drop-in hockey, tournaments, and other local hockey events. We're looking for players who consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect for players of all skill levels, and an understanding that hockey can be competitive without being intimidating.
Being a skilled hockey player isn't what earns an invitation. We're looking for players who make those around them better, communicate positively, and understand when to dial back their speed or physicality to match the group.
Every invited player has been personally approved by Northern Lites leadership because we believe they'll contribute to the safe, welcoming, and supportive culture we've worked hard to build. Invitations may be extended—or withdrawn—at the discretion of Northern Lites leadership.
If you or someone you know should be considered for the DRAG List, please email us at [email protected] or reach out on Facebook.
