Our ice time is designed to maximize ice time, keep the game fun, and help every player continue to improve.

Our time begins with a focused 10–15 minute skill session centered on a monthly theme, such as skating, passing, puck control, shooting, or positioning. Rather than spending an entire time on drills, we keep instruction concise so players can immediately apply what they've learned.

The remainder of each session is dedicated to a full-ice scrimmage. An experienced coach will lead the opening skill segment and remain on the ice throughout the scrimmage to observe play, provide real-time feedback, and help identify team and individual areas for improvement. This approach allows players to develop their skills in a game-like environment while maintaining the fast-paced, enjoyable atmosphere that makes Northern Lites unique.

Whether you're learning a new skill or refining your game, every practice offers an opportunity to grow while playing the sport we all love.

While Northern Lites is a women-centered hockey community, we occasionally host D.R.A.G. Skates (Designated Roster – Approved Guys). These invitation-only sessions allow a small group of pre-approved men to join us on the ice to help create a fun, competitive, and supportive skating environment.

D.R.A.G. skates remain women-focused. Invited players are expected to respect the purpose of the skate by adjusting their pace, limiting physical contact, and helping create a positive experience for everyone—from first-time skaters to seasoned players. The goal is to challenge and support our players, not overpower them.

Participation is by invitation only and is considered a privilege. Our priority is maintaining the welcoming, inclusive culture that defines Northern Lites while giving our members an opportunity to skate with a wider variety of players in a safe and respectful environment.
